Multi-Dial with Windows 95
Dial-Up Networking - CHAP login
Windows 95 comes with Internet access
software and can be set up to use a Multi-Dial account.
Please note that although the information
given here is believed to be correct we cannot directly support
the use of any other software except that provided with your
Multi-Dial connection.
If your machine is connected to a local
area network, check with the system
administrator before continuing with these instructions.
Configuration
The following explains how to set up Windows 95 to use a Multi-Dial
account, connecting
using the CHAP protocol.
Essential components
1. Multi-Dial account details
2. Windows 95 installation disks or CD-ROM
3. Correctly installed modem
First
Steps - the infrastructure
1. Ensure that Dial-Up Networking has been installed.
o Double click My Computer
o Double click Control Panel
o Double click Add/Remove Programs
o Select the Windows Setup tab
o Select Communications
o Click the Details... button
o Check the Dial-Up Networking option
if its not already checked
o Click OK
2. Click on the Network icon in Control
Panel. (You need to add a Client, an Adapter and a Protocol.)
3. The Client you add is Microsoft Networks
4. The Adapter you add is Microsoft Dial-up
Adapter
5. The Protocol you add is Microsoft
- select TCP/IP from the list offered. The default IPX/SPX
and NetBEUI protocols can be removed if your not using them
on a local area network.
6. You don't need a Service
7. Windows 95 will need to reboot after
any changes
Setting
up a dial up connection
1. Double click My Computer
2. Double click the new folder called
Dial-Up Networking
3. Double click on Make New Connection
4. Follow the screens providing information
required.
5. Note: your modem should already have
been installed from Add New hardware in Control Panel
6. Use the corresponding Point of Presence
telephone number (supporting CHAP) for local rate call, PoP
numbers
7. When finished, select the new icon
and bring up its Properties box (The shortcut is to right
click the icon and choose Properties)
8. Click Configure then General
o Set the Maximum Speed to 115200
9. Go to Connection, click on Advanced
o Tick Use Error Control
o Tick Compress data
o Tick Use Flow Control and Hardware
o Click OK
10. Click on Server type and select PPP,Windows
95,Windows NT,Internet
11. In the Advanced options:
o Uncheck Log on to network
o Check Enable software compression
o Uncheck Require encrypted password
12. In Allowed network protocols:
o Uncheck NetBEUI
o Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible
13. Then click TCP/IP Settings...
o Check Server assigned IP addresses
o Check Server assigned name server addresses
o Check Use IP header compression
o Check Use Default Gateway on Remote
Network Note: important check
o Click OK
o Click OK to finish the required edits
Using
your Dial Up Connection
1. Double click the new icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder,
a Connect to PIPEX window will appear, in the User Name box,
type sol immediately followed by your Multi-Dial username
(for example, if your username is zz99, enter solzz99@uk.uudial.com)
2. In the Password box, enter your Multi-Dial
password.
3. Ensure the telephone number is correct
and then click Connect
4. A window will appear stating Dialing...,
then Verifying username and password... and finally Connected
5. You can now run WINSOCK compatible
programs, such as Internet Explorer
6. To break the connection click on the
Disconnect button
Trouble
shooting
The first place to visit when trouble shooting Dial-Up Networking
is the Microsoft Knowledge Base where you can search for information
on any Microsoft product, try searching for 'DUN'.
Multiple ISP connections - multiple connections should be
possible by creating additional connections in the Dial-Up
Networking folder and completing the relevant telephone numbers
and server settings. The default connection can be chosen
by opening the Control Panel and clicking the Internet icon.
The default modem settings should be sufficient in most cases,
however you may wish to check the following points in the
Configure|Connection tab:
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Advanced...
Check Use flow control
Check Hardware (RTS/CTS)
The default Dial-Up Adapter Properties should be sufficient
in most cases, however you may wish to check the following
points by
1. Clicking on the Network icon in Control Panel.
2. Select Dial-Up Adapter and click Properties
3. Select Bindings and ensure TCP/IP
is ticked
4. Select Advanced, select Use IPX Compression
and set Value to No
5. Click OK
The default TCP/IP Properties should
be sufficient in most cases. You can enter Multi-Dial network
settings directly into the Control Panel, although this is
not recommended if you are using other Internet connections.
0. Click on the Network icon in Control Panel.
1. Select TCP/IP Protocol and click Properties
2. Select Bindings and ensure Client
for Microsoft Networks is ticked
3. Select DNS, tick Enable DNS, enter
your Multi-Dial user name in Host and uk.uudial.com in Domain
4. Type 158.43.240.4 in DNS server search
order and click Add
5. Type 158.43.240.3 as the second DNS
server and click Add
6. Select IP Address and ensure Obtain
an IP address automatically is checked
7. Select WINS Configuration and check
Disable WINS Resolution
8. No edits are required for Gateway
and Advanced
9. Click OK
