ISDN Setup

Installation is straightforward, and consists of two stages. First you must install the terminal adapter, and then install and configure dial up networking. A short summary explaining how to install the most commonly used ISDN terminal adapters can be found below:

You will need to ensure that your ISDN terminal adapter supports SYNCHRONOUS-PPP (SYNCPPP) or V.120. Other V.110 standards are not supported and the connection software will need to use CHAP authentication. Currently the service supports one 64kbps channel with no compression or bonding. Multi-link is not supported.
Currently all information is based on Windows 95, or Windows NT 4, however the information will still be relevant for any operating system. Feedback is welcomed from users trying Windows NT or Trumpet for example. Please e-mail service@compwise.net with "Multi-Dial ISDN Query" as the subject of the e-mail detailing any information you have.

Terminal adapter review

STL Blazer - Active ISDN Terminal Adapter

The STL Blazer is a small ISA internal card, installation is simple under Windows 95, as it supports Plug and Play. Read and follow the A4 manual amendment before installing the card, it has important information regarding Plug & Play under Windows 95. Then follow the steps in the A5 manual to complete the installation. The card needs no special settings to select SyncPPP, simply follow the Dial-Up Networking instructions to make a connection.

After ISDN installation using Add New Hardware in the Control Panel, select European switch or Euro ISDN in the ISDN Configuration Wizard. Ignore any SPID settings.

USR Courier I-modem (Internal)

The Courier I-modem is nearly a full length ISA card, the card supports Plug and Play under Windows 95, but testing indicates that this is less than smooth, especially with some Pentium BIOS's. It was necessary to disable one of the internal com ports and manually configure that card before Windows 95 would properly recognise the card, this still left 'ghost' artifacts in the Control Panel. Read and follow the A5 installation guide before installing the card. Depending on how smooth installation proceeds Windows 95 may automatically detect the new hardware, a driver disk is provided, select Courier I-Modem with ISDN PC or you need to use add new modem via the control panel to complete the installation. The card needs no special settings to select SyncPPP, simply follow the Dial-Up Networking instructions to make a connection. But AT*V2=5 in the Extra Settings field will select SyncPPP.

After ISDN installation using Add New Hardware in the Control Panel, select European switch or Euro ISDN in the ISDN Configuration Wizard. Ignore any SPID settings.

USR Courier I-modem (External)

The external Courier, connects to any available COM port with the short cable supplied. Windows 95 should automatically detect the new hardware, choose Driver disk provided by hardware manufacturer when prompted to or you need to use add new modem via the control panel to complete the installation. A driver disk is provided. The card needs no special settings to select SyncPPP, simply follow the Dial-Up Networking instructions to make a connection. If there are problems after completing the Dial-Up Networking instructions a special AT command needs to be inserted in the Extra Settings field, selecting SyncPPP. Right click the new icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder and choose Properties. Then click Configure... Connection, Advanced... and enter AT*V2=5 in the Extra Settings field.

After ISDN installation using Add New Hardware in the Control Panel, select European switch or Euro ISDN in the ISDN Configuration Wizard. Ignore any SPID settings.
